- Additional Information: G C Townend was killed during the raid on Gelsenkirchen, 12th-13th June 1944. His Lancaster, HK545 KO-E was airborne 2332 12th June 1944 from Witchford. Hit by Flak and crashed onto the headquarters of Gelsenberg-Benzin, apx. 3 km West of Gelsenkirchen. All were buried locally. They have been subsequently re-interred in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery. Those with decorations gained them as immediate awards for outstanding airmanship and devotion to duty during operations to Karlsruhe in April. The joint citation was Gazetted 9Jun44. F/O Townends parents lived at Banbury in Oxfordshire.
